The Lord Selkirk Boys Pipe Band is a place where boys learn to play the pipes or drums, but also a place where they learn teamwork, camaradie, and leadership, and have fun while doing it. Individual and team competition is an optional part of membership in the band, but musical instruction and group performance is the focus.
Boys between the ages of 8 and 18 may join the band as a beginner piper, snare drummer, tenor drummer or bass drummer. Beginner instruction is either individual or small group instruction, and boys progress at their own pace. All instruction is free. Bagpipes and drums are provided when the boy is ready to use the instruments; beginners are required to purchase their own "practice chanter" or drumsticks and practice pads.
Beginners practice on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 10:00 throughout the school year. Full members of the band practice from 9:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays, and pipers have additional practices on Monday evenings. Practices are usually held at the Assiniboia Christian Centre at 3390 Portage Avenue, but alternate locations are also used on occasion. In addition to practicing, the band performs a number of times throughout the year.
The band is always looking for new recruits. Please feel free to contact Perry Kotelko for additional information. Boys and their parents are encouraged to come in and see a practice at any time throughout the year.
